Osteopathic Manual Medicine (OMM)

Dr. Jarosz is excited to offer treatment and healing through osteopathy, a gentle hands-on whole-body approach to musculoskeletal pain, regardless of origin. This methodology is deeply rooted in understanding the interrelationship between anatomy, physiology and embryology, and the body’s inherent ability to restore, repair and heal.  Using this treatment method, Dr. Jarosz assesses the health within the neuromuscular system, including joints, ligaments, muscles, fascia, vasculature, nerves, lymphatics, viscera and more. The following synthesized treatment plan will include various applicable treatment techniques. Cranial osteopathy is her focus, which is used in treating headaches, tinnitus, vertigo, nerve pain, birth strain and sacral dysfunction.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is ideal and appropriate for all ages, including newborns and geriatric populations. It is applicable in both, acute and chronic pain as well as tightness, stiffness or limited mobility related to sports injury, motor vehicle accident or chronic illness.  Dr. J uses gentle manual manipulation of the various body tissue layers to release strains and encourage the body’s inherent self-healing mechanism.  The objective is to correct structure and therefore improve function, which in turn allows for maximum self-healing capacity.

Osteopathic treatment is gentle, therefore presents no adverse reactions when compared to other medical approaches. However, Dr. Jarosz does offer more traditional medical treatment options through joint, tendon, ligament and muscle interventional methods which may at times be necessary or preferred to overcome pain cycles.

The uniqueness of osteopathic medicine lies in the application of osteopathic principles where the neuromusculoskeletal system is crucial to full expression of life and health. The osteopathic concepts include:

  • “The body is a unit.” The person is an integrated unit comprised of multitude of functions (physiology) and interrelated structures (anatomy). It consists of mind, body and spirit.

  • “Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated”; structure dictates function, thus abnormality in one can lead to an abnormality in the other.

  • “The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms, has inherent capacity to defend and repair itself”; its own intrinsic ability to self-regulate and self-heal.

  • “When normal adaptability is disrupted or when environmental changes overcome the body’s capacity for self-maintenance, illness may ensue.”

  • “Rational treatment is based on the first three principles.”

History of Osteopathy
Andrew Taylor Still

Osteopathy and its philosophy was developed by A.T. Still, a physician, in the late 1800’s, during a time whereby medicines often did more harm than good.  He coined this new system of medicine "osteopathy" (osteon, bone in Greek), due to its rooted basis in anatomy. Still developed his methods of diagnosis and treatment on the firm belief that disease in one body part affects all other parts. All body systems operate in unison.

Through experimentation and clinical observation, A.T. Still not only developed the art of osteopathic treatment, but applied directly to the musculoskeletal system. Today osteopathic treatment plays in essential role in health and wellness for people of all ages and accomplishes both, prevention as well as healing.

Osteopathic Manual Treatment (OMT)

In general, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment is a gentle hands-on treatment provided by a physician who practices Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM).  The OMT and OMM nomenclature are frequently used interchangeably.  A set of specific manual medicine techniques have been developed and are of value in the somatic component of the musculoskeletal system.

Treatment Goals/Specific Techniques, examples:
  • Musculoskeletal/Postural

  • Circulatory

  • Respiratory

  • Psychosocial

  • Bioenergetic

Benefits of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

In short, OMT improves function, decreases pain and revitalizes all body systems, therefore encourages healing.   Utilizing OMM can delay or avoid unnecessary invasive procedures. Chronic issues may never resolve, but the idea is to enhance structure and function, thus potentiate healing, resulting in pain/symptom alleviation. â€‹â€‹â€‹
